Hi all - I’m considering starting an LLC in Pittsburgh. I figure there are probably many small businesses in the Protohaven community. If anyone has experience with the establishment process and is willing to let me pick their brain, I would greatly appreciate it. Also looking for recommendations for tax preparers (contractor & small business speciality) - if anyone has a CPA recommendation I would greatly appreciate it.
I would be happy to help. Establishing an LLC is quick and inexpensive (if you do it yourself, much more expensive with attorney). I am traveling this week but if you give me a good time to call, I can walk you through the process. Jim Perkins
I’ve set up a couple of LLCs in PA and other states using Legal Zoom. They offer standardized packages at a minimal price.
My tax account is Don Franty (http://franty.com/). He’s helped me with tax preparation on 3 businesses (plus my personal taxes) for nearly 10 years. I’m extremely satisfied! Give him a call!
I recommend getting a lawyer. It’s not that filing the forms is that hard, but the legalese that protects you later if you have a tax or legal problem. I have a five page operating agreement that sets out what my duties and responsibilities are, and most importantly, the limits of my liability and ownership. If somebody sues my company for any reason, I’m personally protected as long as I follow the terms of the operating agreement. You’ve heard of the ‘corporate veil’? It’s not automatic, it has to be raised properly, or you might as well not bother. I recommend Eric Davis - https://elliott-davis.com.
I’ve used Eric Davis for my LLCs and it was worth every penny.
